Welcome back to another episode of Five Minutes With, where we highlight those who are making an impact both locally and all around the world. I’m Morgan Yonge, joined today by Andrew Bernett with Bee Well Therapeutics. Andrew, thank you for joining today.
Andrew
You’re welcome. Thanks for having me.
Morgan
Yes. So you have created one heck of a product for the medical industry. So tell me about Be well Therapeutics and the fantastic patented design that you’ve created.
Andrew
Sabharwal Therapeutics has created out of necessity and love. So I’ve created an entirely different platform to deliver any medication that’s a topical through the body, through the skin to the body, through the skin. And I’ve done that through breathable occlusion and the art of trapping topicals while letting the body breathe.
Morgan
And so you have a beautiful story. Your love for your wife and her precious hands. So dive into this story that you told me off set. I just love the story.
Andrew
Yeah. So, my wife is a board certified dermatologist with a terrible case of hand eczema. And during her, one of her worst flares, two weeks long, she was waking me up every night to scratching, living up her hands and putting on her topicals and her white cotton gloves to try to get some sleep for the next day.
Andrew
Well, as a mom of two and a dermatologist, her hands were very stuck closed for a while. So after two weeks of not sleeping, I came to her and I said, hey, I was like, this is your world. I said, I know that you’re doing everything you can, but why isn’t it working? She said, I am doing everything I can.
Andrew
I don’t know, so I was like, well, if I come up with something, will you use it? And she said she would. So I was like, okay. So after one night, I, you know, I was thinking, you know, show some candle burning. And I started playing with it and I was like, my hands are soft. I wonder if I can do something with this.
Andrew
So, I went to the garage, were all cool. Things happen, and I started experimenting with beeswax, that I had laying around and some cotton gloves that we, you know, that we had just for helping with her and, and, so long story short, I traded some gloves. My first iteration completely destroyed the bedsheets, but she told me that her hands were softer, so I was like, okay, I think I got something here.
Andrew
My second iteration, I gave her some, some gloves after I treated out the oil and, she came back to me, short time later, and she said, my hands are clear. And I said, okay, great. What’s that mean? She’s like, well, it only took less than three days. I was like, okay. She’s like, that’s significant. I was like, all right, so now what?
Andrew
So I talked to five other derm friends of mine, and I said, hey, guys, this is what I did. This is how it worked. What do y’all think? I was like, I don’t want to waste time, money and effort on something that’s already out there. I had five dermatologists that are experts in the field come to come back and say the same thing.
Andrew
When are you coming to market? And I was like, okay, well, I guess I have a business plan now. So from there, it was it was, it was, you know, I finished the R&D launch, the patent, filed for the patent and launched the business. And then from that point on, you know, the first two months in business, I was passing out product left, right and center.
Andrew
Anybody that I knew that could possibly entertain the thought of, you know, using my product, I gave it to them. What I was not expecting was the results that everybody came back with. This helped so many conditions from scleroderma to the people that were undergoing, chemo for, you know, getting dry skin to X months. Right. It didn’t matter.
Andrew
And that’s when I started to realize that I had a I had actually developed a topical delivery material that is unlike anything else.
Morgan
Wow. And so you said cotton is a little too dry and absorbent, and then all the other materials are just not the right fit for some of these cases. But yours is. It starts as an oh, what is that word?
Andrew
Occlusive.
Morgan
Occlusive? What does that mean?
Andrew
Yes. Occlusive is just a way of forming a barrier in the derm world. So yeah, up until now, there’s been, you know, for the past 100 years, there’s been cotton and plastic. You know, cotton is very limiting. And really, you know, that’s pretty much the standard of care as of right now. And what we found is it just absorbs the topicals, leaving minimal for the skin.
Andrew
Then you have plastic on the other, on the other end of the spectrum, which you are limited to five minutes increments to wearing, you know, the plastic gloves. Then you have to take them off. And that’s simply because the body starts actually rejecting at the cellular level everything that you’re trying to do. So it’s really you’re fighting, you’re fighting yourself and you’re actually going to end up becoming worse off by using plastic.
Andrew
So my materials fall in the dead center of the tooth. They’re not to absorb it, but they’re not too limiting as far as breathability. So they’re trapping the topicals as a moisture barrier and essentially driving it into the skin under occlusion. Making it extremely effective.
Morgan
That’s incredible. So what are some of these? So eczema it works well with obviously. Yes. And then what are some of these other ones with stem off for them.
Andrew
Eczema psoriasis. We’re looking at radiation dermatitis. Diabetic feet. I got something for coming for them. Just keeping them soft so that the, calluses don’t form then, leading to the, diabetic foot ulcers. There’s over 30 some skin conditions that, and counting that my materials can be used for it. I mean, just the shots and pills deliver medications to the body.
Andrew
My materials do the same thing, but just through the skin. So it’s it’s, you know, there’s a lot of chronic conditions out there that have never that there hasn’t been a cure for or been able to treat. And I feel like with this new platform, that’s not going to be the case anymore.
Morgan
That’s amazing. And you’re in 17 doctor’s offices across the country right now. And yes, adding more and more by the day, I’m sure. Absolutely. If someone if it’s not in someone’s doctor’s office and they really need this, how can they access it?
Andrew
So my website be well therapeutics.com. And we always have free shipping because you know, it’s the least I can do to try to help, you know, get you got get everybody better. But yeah be well therapeutics.com and I’ll ship to anywhere in the United States as of right now.
